        Hi All,
We at The Coles Ferry Ferret Home want to dedicate this page to all the people that helped with/or are now taking these angels into their homes and hearts, letting them know that they were worth saving. I know God holds a special place for you (and them ) at the Rainbow Bridge.

        Winchester

I was in my rocking chair last week, chilling out after a very busy night at work. Lots of pneumonias in our hospital now and lots of chronic lung patients to care for.

I reached into one of the playpens and brought out the handsome and handful Winchester. He was still asleep and looked so peaceful. I wrapped him into a soft piece of fleece and rocked him and talked to him. He has changed so much since I brought him home from Lori's only a week after the Ohio Rescue.

We sat and rocked for quite a while. It was all icy and cold and overcast out. We were warm and I had gotten home safely from work. It was a quiet time and a time for closeness for the both of us. I wondered how he survived nights and days like that at the breeding farm. He is now safe, well-fed, warm, and happy. After a few moments, I fell asleep too, and we both dreamed of the coming spring.

Bless you Lori, from the bottom of my and Winchester's heart for bringing him here to me to love and cherish!!

        Remington Nelson Smith

He was a "re-rescue from the Ohio group. I'm not sure where he was re-rescued from. One day during a trip to the shelter I noticed his big head peeking over a hammock. His face seemed frozen in a stoic expression. He seemed to like me picking him up and holding him. As I softly spoke to him he would watch my face. He isn't handsome like Winchester, but his loyalty and gentle nature for a fur kid so big makes me smile. He;s a plain 'ol sable guy, with big thick neck and shoulders. When I walk by his play pen he;s up and ready to be lifted out. He loves to sit beside me as I read. He'll rest his head on my leg. I know he's waiting for a treat, but many times a few minutes of scritches are almost as good. I'm flattered by his affection towards me, I can't imagine his life at the Ohio farm, the transport, and then shipped to where ever he was re-rescued from.

-- I'm glad he's here, his funny clumsy dance never fails to make me laugh.

        Bellissima

My three Ohio rescue sisters are 1 year old and the only McKids living in Canada.

I flew down to the MaFF shelter in December 2007 and picked up Bellissima, returned again in April 2008 to pick up her two biological sibs.

The family reunion was extremely successful. They sleep, eat and play together. Mini profile on the sisters:

All three are extremely affectionate with their human mom. None of them are descented. All of them have silky, fluffy coats. Two have cataracts, assessed to be a combination of genetic predisposition and the mink diet they were fed at the DMK farm.

Bellissima is the most energetic, loves to climb, responds to her name and isn't great about using the paper when outside of her cage. She loves chasing and hiding crochet eggs. She's made friends with two of my business but is still afraid of the two gibs and my Alpha. She has developed a cataract in one eye. She is very protective of her newly arrived sister Carissima and stayed glued to her side while she recovered from a tooth infection. She has emerged as the Alpha of this little group.

You can read Bellissima's story on the Ohio Rescue website: http://www.ohioferretrescue.com/DMKcanada.htm

Carissima had a terrible tooth abscess, missing teeth and infected gums when she first came to me. But with a tooth extraction and antibiotics the problem has resolved. She has a congenitally deformed front paw and cataracts in both eyes. That doesn't slow her down much and she loves to romp and play with her sisters.

Principessa has perfect health and is the largest and heaviest of the three. She's amazingly athletic with a solid muscular body. She loves chasing Bellissima when crochet eggs are being rolled about. She does not tolerate any other ferrets outside of her sisters and does not like playing on her own without at least one of them being present. She is the only one of the three that enjoys bathtime and swims around in the water.

They are an absolute joy for me and I cherish them as much as my other five fuzzkids.

        "Rosie" and "Moon"

Rosie is the one peeking up amidst her toys and Moon is the one asleep in the middle of her toys. The stuffed ferret she is sleeping on is her favorite sleeping place. She looks so cute there.

Rosie is a little hellion and is teenie tiny. She ain't afraid of nuthin!! And I mean nothin!! She is sugar sweet to me but will reach out and touch my husband just for looking at her. She is very delicate in her physical build but a dominant giant in personality.

Moon is her opposite. She is an extremely well put together ferret. Rock solid, well muscled and on the large muscular side for a female. But, she is oh so skittish. You can hear her claws scrambling on the floor to get away when she is startled. She is a very quiet girl too. Not nearly as rambunctious as Rosie. She has been cautious but is now giving me extended morning kisses every morning.

Together at play they sound like a perculator making a batch of fresh coffee. Moon usually instigates with Rosie but Rosie finishes it off and has much more left when Moon is done and ready for something else. Rosie will chase us and play tag and she loves the blanket ride too. Both of those games are much too rowdy for Moon who prefers a cuddle and a treat.

Both are adorable in completely opposite ways. I am so grateful to have them.

        from: Dianna Desrochers

        "Duncan" and "Issy"

        Their story:

        This is Miss Isadora

When Renee [Downs] came back with the MANY ferrets from her trip to Ohio, I went with her on several occasions to care for them at the MSPCA facilities here where she had them housed temporarily. I tried hard not to fall in love with any ... but we know how that goes, LOL. At the time I had not planned on adopting any, as I had just adopted two ferrets that I had been fostering for my Local Shelter, The Educated Ferret Association, in order to make room for the McKids that she brought back from Ohio on her trip out there. Besides ... all of Renee's ferrets had been spoken for already :-(

Duncan and Miss Isadora were among the ferrets that Renee had brought back and are a bonded pair and what a strange pair they are, LOL. Duncan is this big ole Albino boy and Miss Isadora is this tiny little Silver girl, but they were inseparable and she is very protective of him. You will always find them curled up together with her on top guarding him. She is ever vigilant and watches over him while he sleeps. Before they left with Renee, we introduced Duncan and Issy to my Bakers Dozen and they got along great, even my alpha male, Bear, accepted them ... like he knew that they were Special and needed to be accepted. I even saw Bear curl up with Duncan as if protecting him while he slept when Issy would be out playing.

        This is Duncan

        Here is Duncan and Bear

Alas .. off they went to their new home leaving a hole in my heart. But as events unfolded, they returned here and I knew it was meant they were supposed to be here and I accepted them into our lives with my whole heart. Thanks to Aunty Renee's help they have become happy ferrets and now love to give more kisses than nips.

Duncan loves his stuffed animals, especially his Rikki Tikki Snake, and will hide them all in a safe place. Miss Issy loves her crocheted eggs, tubes and her Duncan.

        Alex & Simon

Here are my 2 boys. I actually got them RIGHT BEFORE they were given to Lori. I contacted the Ohio SPCA www.ohiospca.org and she went in under cover to get more pics since the last ones in the video that was going around was in Jan I think? She used the cover to get in that she was there to buy a breeder pair and got 2 babies.. I told her I would take them both. The smallest one who was an albino turned out to NOT be a female but was a boy so we have Alexander who is the albino and Simon who is a panda and also deaf. Simon can be a handful, but he knows some sign language and has calmed down quite a bit.

Alex and Simon have also bonded well with my other 3 fur kids, Hamlet and Romeo who are now 5 and Socrates who I believe is over 6. Hamlet has insulinoma and Socrates is adrenal and pretty old. These 2 seem to stick together, but Romeo loves running with the DMK boys.

This is them when they were about 3 months old doing the weasel war dance

This is OneFlower. She was about 4-5 months old when rescued from the Ohio breeder, and has blossomed into a beautiful young lady. She started as a hooded sable, but between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the hood disappeared! Who knows, it may return in the spring!

OneFlower is easily spooked, but loves rough and tumble play, and is herself gentle with people. She is a toy destroyer, not so much a stasher. She has a thing for the remote control, and I have to keep it out of her reach, but otherwise keeps out of too much trouble!

Hello!... My name is Radar O'Reilly

I came to live in Central NY on January 6, 2008. Nice lady, name Hurricane Renee. Ok, her real name is Renee Downs transported me to New York. My mommie has been waiting for me since December and I finely arrived here in January. But I have to tell you a secret, when Miss Renee open that back door to the vehicle. I saw my mom.....I just knew this was going to be my stop. I heard Miss Renee say to my Mom. We kinda let them pick out who they want for a mom. I knew who I wanted....so I jump to the top level of the cage before anyone else. I was the first one to jump into mom's hands. First thing I did was give her tons of kisses. Now, how can she not refused that. Next minutes, I was being carried into the home....... yahoo!

You see I am a rescue from DMK's Farm. I am one of the 65 that were re-surrendered back into the Shelter On September 16, 2007 a very large scale rescue took place in Ohio. "DMK Rescue Video"

Now that I am in my new home. I have tons of toys, blankets, and food. Just recently I was moved into a ferret nation cage. Wow, is this cage huge. Mom has all kinds of bedding and toys inside this cage. My favorite toy in the house is tunnels, tubes. My new mom has them all over the house behind the furniture. My sister Misty May gets a little upset when I crawl in bed with her. What's her problem? My other brothers are pretty cool. My favorite is Bode Miller, he watches over me. He looks just like me but bigger.

My mom always knows where I am in the house, because I don't stop talking. I just too excited! I am so happy that I am in my forever home. I have a lot to learn but I sure I will enjoy my new life's journey.

Thank you, Renee for bring me home.
Thank you all who were involved in this rescue to get me into my forever home.
        Love Radar O'Reilly

        Shenanigins & Rosie

        Shenanigins

I was helping Renee Downs, an integral DMK rescuer, with transporting a number of little ones when the meekest of all DMK ferrets in the group LOUDLY called to me. Every time I tried to help with other ferrets, I saw a flash of green in the room that made me panic because I thought a wild animal had made its way in. Each time I checked out the green flashing, it came from a fluffy, dark sable girl snuggled in a sleep sack beneath the others. She would not let me make friends with the other ferrets all weekend long. Had it not been for her eyes, or this odd phenomena of flashing me that kept happening, I probably would have never noticed her as she was the quietest, meekest and unneedy of the group. I so much wanted to take in some other kids that needed homes such as someone whom I named JinkyPop. But the baby who had been born on St Patrick's day, came to be known as Shenanigins and made her home right here with our family in Tennessee.

This is my baby with Karen D's Rosie the Riveter that I fostered for a bit and rehabbed. I didn't know if they thought it'd be interesting or not. I mean to me, a big part of the DMK story is all of the helping, loving hands that pitched in with the rehabbing them into real ferrets and all of the social connections of those that helped in transporting (like Sue and Dave). So ... just in case. Here is a pic.

Descriptions of some of the pics

Okay, Crackers is tiny and a handful as you can see compared to Sean's Pharos. Then you have girls playing and girls in the sleep sack ... the DMK kids are obsessive with bedding. If you try to take one of mine "out" of a sleep sack, they will turn tail and run to the bottom of one. Meeka was way too thin from the hell she had been through. First the farm, then holding area, then loris, then Masons, then rescued again, then to Cindy S's, then another transport to here. We had to hand feed her to get her to eat for a bit. There is Scott with her feeding her. She bit some. Since Sean is quiet, patient and autistic, he rehabbed her biting. Sean was integral in Karen's ferret being rehabbed. People don't know that. Anyway, in this pic you can see her really getting way too rough. Just an interesting shot.

        Meeka-Crackers

We had welcomed a troubled little 'bino named Rosie The Riveter (previously known as Jillian) for a dear friend named Karen D. She was fostered and rehabbed here for quite some time and caused our family, well ... quite a bit of trouble. Lol. Despite the challenges, we missed her after she left as a great big silence overcame the household. I was touched how Renee Downs seemed to have a special way of matching ferrets with new owners during the DMK rescue. So I asked her, to select a baby just for me that Christmas. And she did. With the generous help of Cindy, Dave and Sue "Cupcake" was placed into my arms and she was soon running throughout my coat. This tiny albino baby was a real firecracker of a personality and was the opposite of my dark, easy going Shenaynay. Shenaynay had one of the easiest of times with the rescue. "Cupcake", sadly, was one of the resurrenders of the rescue and went through a hell of a time. She retained an endearing little personality despite it all. I used to yell at her, "Crackers!" because she was nuts and very hyper. She'd jump and dance around each time on cue. Later, something fascinating came into light. Crackers ... was profoundly deaf. Yet she could "hear" me saying "Crackers" and it absolutely delighted her. So, we reluctantly named her Crackers. She was a bit too sweet for the name however and the name Meeka also kept coming to mind. We could not make up our mind what her name was for so long that I'd refer to her as Meeka/Crackers. Eventually that did become her name. I am delighted to say that our home is once again no longer silent and filled with energy from this tiny little being.
